Hi All,
Newbie to DD WRT here. Been eyeballing switching for a long time and finally pulled the trigger when my ASUS router's native firmware refused to load the backup I made of all the settings I'd put into it. It would've taken a full day to re-do everything but there's no way I'm going to continue to use firmware that can't do what it's supposed to do. At any rate, DD WRT is great, but comes with its own frustrations - it's not super user friendly, and it suffers the major headache that puts many people off of Linux based anything: there's a million ways to do many things and only one of which applies to your situation and nobody posts the solution, it's overly complex if they do, or it doesn't apply to your version.
Anyway, I've searched like crazy and can't figure these issues out. There's 3.
1. My attached USB stick will dismount for no discernible reason. It'll mount to tmp/dev/SDA1, but then at some arbitrary point it will disappear.
2. The GUI becomes inaccessible. I'll be at home on the LAN or on cellular data and 192.168.1.1 (or the DDNS address) will not connect. Times out. Unplug router, plug back in, it works! Wait a few days and the GUI is not accessible again. The WAN connection/internet access works fine, but the GUI times out.
3. I've looked for every tutorial I can but can't seem to get remote GUI access working. Ivengot everything set like the tutorial says, I know my DDNS works because I can access any NAS and other things remotely, but not the GUI. Related to #2 above,
I know the inaccessibility to the GUI is not a DDNS issue.
TIA for any help.

The most important thing to do when coming from stock is to erase nvram, did you do that?
N.B. some routers brick when erasing nvram (I think the AC66U will brick but the AC68 is safe but research this).
Erasing nvram is done through telnet/putty and issue:
