I've been running my N66U at max TX power for well over a year now with no problems. I do have an active cooling mod in the form of an 80mm fan run off the USB. Without active cooling my temps were upwards of 45-50C. If you're thinking about purchasing one of these pull the trigger, and don't forget a fan and SD card.

Hello, all
The wiki on flashing this router looks old and inconsistent. Are people safely flashing this Asus RT-N66U router? I just got one and I'd like to do so if it is safe.

It's safe but only if you flash the 3k.x build with the router name in the file. _________________ I am far from a guru, I'm barely a novice.

I cannot seem to get my RT-N66U to work with DD-WRT. I have spent way more time then expected and read through many guides. Can someone please give me a step-by-step guide. Here is my current process with no luck
1. 30/30/30 Hard Reset
2. Recovery Utility to downgrade firmware to FW_RT_N66U_30043762524
3. Wait what seems like 30-40 minutes
4. 30/30/30 Hard Reset
5. Recovery Utility to install the DD-WRT.V24-30771_NEWD2_K2.6_MINI_RT-N66U
6. Wait what seems like 30-40 minutes
7. Notice that dd-wrt is now on my wifi networks list.
8. 30/30/30 Hard Reset
9. Recovery Utility to install DD-WRT.V24-30771_NEWD2_K2.6_BIG_RT-N66U
10. Everything looks perfect, I wait my 30-40 minutes again and only the power light and NIC1 light are on and nothing else happens.
I need to install the Big version and not the Mini and sadly it has to be 2.6 instead of 3.x for a program that interfaces with it. Any tips?
I need help with 2.6 not 3.x so it shouldn't be the same stuff your posting over and over. The wiki hasn't helped and there are many variants of tutorials that try to explain how to do it, each one seems to be different and so far none have worked for me.
I have successfully gotten kingkong-nv64k-RT-N66U-broadcom.trx to install which is 2.6 but sadly the software I am integrating it with need to be post 6/23/14 and kingkong is 6/7/14 and is lacking chillispot functionality. Ill keep trying, but 2.6 does work I am just having issues getting the right version of 2.6.
What is with the hostility? I thought the forum was to help one another, not to bash and refuse to help or complain about posting over and over again.
the newest build "dd-wrt.v24-33375_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U" bricks the router into recovery.
I am currently using "dd-wrt.v24-30709_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U" as recommended a page back.
I've been able to recover then reflash the 30709 build but am tired of messing with it today
33375 bricked the rt-n66w b1 twice now.
Also I'm getting 120 mbit speeds on a 450 capable router with dd wrt firmware. My old buffalo wzr 300hp with a 400mhz processor got 250 mbit easy. I'd like to upgrade to the latest stable on the Asus rt-n66w to improve overall speeds.

Use 33215. _________________ 2 times APU2 Opnsense 21.1 with Sensei

Had the exact same issue with a RT-N66U today. Used slobodan's suggestion to go back to 33215 and was able to install that with no issues.
From the way the lights on the device behaved, it looked like the newer version was either putting the router into some kind of never ending reboot loop, or else it was continually crashing and restarting. I hope this issue can be fixed.
Because of this, until such time as the boot loop issue is fixed, I suggest that instead of using an older version of DD-WRT (which contains the vulnerable version of dnsmasq), you instead use version 380.68_4 (or later) of the Asuswrt-Merlin custom firmware for Asus routers. The download page is here:
I discuss this in a bit more detail in my post in the above-mentioned thread. Personally I'd stick with DD-WRT if it didn't have the endless boot loop, but until that is fixed I personally think it is more important to have the fixed version of dnsmasq. Here are some links to articles about this issue (just a small sampling of the many that were published):
Hi all, I have a network comprised of a NT-56U and NT-66U. I have Andy Padavan's build running on the NT-56U, which uses AP-Client mode to give Internet access to its subnet by piggybacking off the NT-66U's connection to our cable modem. (If you are curious why I want another subnet: The NT-66U is in our electronics closet and the NT-56U is in my personal quarters. Boundaries are very important to me!)
I'm very happy with how I have the NT-56U set up, but I'm completely new at the custom firmware game, so I can only assume that Padavan's excellent firmwarwe is sadly incompatible with my NT-66U.
I looked at a few comparison articles and decided DD-WRT was my best option because it has the best reputation for providing full access to the capabilities of the hardware.
For some perspective: I don't need to push this thing to its limits right off the bat; I just want to be able to explore the full capabilities of the hardware at my own pace. Once I get the right stuff installed, I'm not very interested in going through the process again for a while. I just want to feel like I own the hardware, simple as that!
Is the wiki up-to-date in terms of the most reliable build, or can anyone recommend a better revision? Also: How do I choose between big and mega?
