Agree. Still have a r7000 gathering dust on shelf. I think there is now a r7000p out and last I knew that was not supported. Do not have one, but know folks that do have the r7800. They love them especially with Kong load. My r8000 runs well with Kong as well. Does not have the cpu speed of the r7800 though. Since I do not do VPNs no biggie. _________________ Unifi Security Gateway:Unifi Firmware Netgear r7800:Voxel Firmware Modem:Netgear CM500V voice and Data. The stock firmware could simply handle loopback the same way as recent DD builds. I recall the stock Asus f/w also has a loopback toggle (or whatever they call it; loopback/hairpin/redirection/etc). The DD GUI option is 'Filter WAN NAT Redirection' but doesn't work in some builds, requiring iptables rules, per egc. Guess we'll see what happens with your next router.
I must say this certainly sounds like a very likely explanation as to what was happening with the Asus router. I'll never know for sure because it's gone. I'm just still in a quandry as what router to buy next. Seems like all of them have shaky ratings.
On the WRT54GS I am running the original stock firmware, the Linksys v7.2.06 (2008). Kinda embarrassed to say that, but it's never caused me any problems and this router has been great. My main reason for upgrading in the first place was faster wifi speeds/signal strength and the WRT54 just has 10/100 ethernet, would like to have the Gigabit ports too.

Do you have a recommendation for a triband unit? I currently use a couple of Asus RT-AC5300s but I believe that the newer ones are locked down.
