Update: Starting Day 4 of trying to solve this - it's got to be something super simple !?!?
50 people have read this and no suggestions . . . ??
hardware X86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz
ddwrt version: tried 55009, 53028 and 50176
update: also tried 55052 - no difference
1) start with fresh install using dd after overwriting disk with /dev/urandom
2) after set access password (save and apply) ssh works fine
update: reboot at this stage yields same problem - ssh connection refused
3) after basic setup (save and apply) ssh works fine
4) after setting ssh to use key and NOT use passwords (save & apply) ssh still works with passwords
5) after reboot ssh fails with connection refused
ALSO: Admin; backup yields 404 error (file not found) on all 3 ddwrt versions used.
I have 50176 running OK on 4 other routers ( 3 - X86 and 1 netgear)
Have not found a way to restore ssh to work. Suggestions?
update: I'm going to try an alternative to see if I have the same problem . . . maybe opnsense???
There might be an explanation (but no solution) - with opnsense live I had to switch my WAN and LAN ports before it would work correctly. I had tried that with ddwrt as well but without success.

The fact that the backups and ssh do not work makes me suspect that you are using a non-activated trial version.
My installation mentioned "click here for 24 hr free trial" at the top of the page but no method of activating the free trial could be found. Since I was going to activate after verifying that my PC could run ddwrt, I decided to purchase another activation (my 4th) and you are correct, the problem(s) disappeared.
It would be good to know how I could have activated that trial period . . . I wrongly assumed it was active and wasted a ton of time trying to get things verified. Next time . . .

Anyhow, I missed the part where you purchased an activation, so my foul-up. But the OP never stated which files you used, public serial, public vga, etc.
I was using dd-wrt_x64_full_vga_2GB. How is activation of the trial supposed to work?
When I clicked on the "click here" link all I got was a scrolling list of credits.

So your problems get solved by bying the activation, but not using it? That sounds strange.
You can try the public X64 version, there backup and ssh works.
And if this is your 4th activation, you should know how activation works.
I don't know if you don't want to understand it.
But the trial version has limited features like no backups, no CLI and no diagnostic.
You activate the trial versions by buying a license and entering the activation key.
For anyone trying or curious about the X86 version of DDWRT, here’s my understanding of the trial version:
1) When you install the x86 version of DDWRT there is a hyperlink at the top of the page which says:
“Click here to ACTIVATE 23 hour free trial” (see screenshot). The link is to the “About” page which provides some info on DDWRT versions and a list of credits to the people who created DDWRT. Activation is available under the Admin tab of the GUI. Not everyone sees the ambiguity of “Click here to ACTIVATE 23 hour free trial”.
2) Apparently there is no such thing as a “23 hour free trial” that needs to be “activated” for the X86 version of DDWRT. The only activation available changes the “23 hour free trial” into a fully activated version of DDWRT. That activation must be purchased and instructions on how to do that are available online. Without that activation, ddwrt is running in “free trial” mode.
3) During the “23 hour free trial”, DDWRT is crippled by at least the following:
a) Console does not work – the full version provides full console access;
b) Backup does not work – the full version allows you to get a backup of your settings;
c) While ssh and telnet can be configured and used in the trial version, that capability is turned off after a reboot;
d) The “23 hour free trial” period can be re-started with a reboot after the 23 hours expires;
e) DDWRT continues to function after the 23 hour time expires subject to the limitations mentioned; and
f) There may be other limitations that I have not discovered – I have not found any documentation on the extent to which the trial version is limited in capabilities. ho1Aetoo mentioned that diagnostics is turned off but that is not something I’ve tried. More info/documentation on the limitations of the “23 hour free trial” would be helpful.
My experience with DDWRT is limited but I do have it installed on 4 X86 devices providing an international VPN. In my opinion it’s a great product and I hope these comments are helpful. If anyone sees errors in my understanding, please provide corrections. Thanks!
