Currently running a build from 2012 (build 18777). It's running on an older Dell that I think has 4GB RAM and a 3.8ghz Pentium 4 (64 bit).

This is used to handle all of the traffic in my house through a VPN tunnel.

What kind of major improvements have been made since 2012 and then since 64 bit DD WRT came out?

Can I update via the web to my router?

What's the best build to run that is OpenVPN capable?

It was not running fine. Kept dropping connection. Web upgrade failed and then couldn't get a clean install to work. Currently running pfsense, but it isn't what I am used to as far as setting up the router. I am a newbie when it comes to networking. I need clear up to date instructions.

If your trying to use the last two versions that just came out today the WebGUI is broken. And yes I also had drop connections too.

Use the version R26138 here.

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/02-04-2015-r26138/x86/

I use the last file listed as dd-wrt_public_vga.image

The only issue I had with this was using the USB NAS feature would cause lag spikes and constant buffering in youtube videos.
