This is only for WRT54G v8.1 fccid: Q87-WRT54GV81

What we know:
- it runs linux from factory
- we know how to make right firmware header

What we don't know:
- we don't have cfe from it to get defaults

What we need:
- one brave tester
- JTAG and serial console is advantage
- wholeflash dump

Please keep all about wrt54g v8.1 in this topic:

If brave means willing to brick a device, then I qualify and am happy to try.

I have four v8.1 devices that I want to turn into client bridges. DD-WRT works perfectly on the v8.0 boxes I'm using.

Can you tell me specifically what you need? (If my need to ask that question disqualifies me, I understand.)

What are the first 4 digits of the serial number on those v8.1's?

If I see if they have one at a local store, I'll solder a JTAG header on it and dump the CFE.bin for you.

Does anyone have any pictures of the inside of one?

MDF0... is the one in front of me.

I'll upload a pic of the board once I remember how to crack the case.

Yes, getting cfe.bin with JTAG is the safest way we can add support.

Man I don't see where you would even attach the header!

Is V8.1 drastically different from V8 or V8.2?

How much Flash/RAM in versions 8.1 and 8.2?

Is that (J2) a serial port in the photo above? If so, maybe pull cfe off with that?

jlells01 - I tried those instructions (using v3 of the "killer")and the router kept telling me the initial upload failed. I'll give it another go and post the results.

Starting with factory firmware v8.1.08, I tried the instructions with and without the tftp tool. Neither works for me. Message from the router web page is "Upgrade are failed!"

Do not use Killer on a Gv 8.1, it already has Linux on it, and a CFE, we just needed the defaults from the CFE. It does not look like they installed a Jtag on it. We have tested DD-WRT on a Gv 8.0 with a Gv 8.1 firmware running on it...and that runs fine, but the real test has to be on a Gv8.1, we need to see if anything in the CFE would cause problems, different GPIO's, etc..

Sometimes one needs to look at the back side of PCB, there is JTAG Smile
