Good question Xeon.
My first instinct is to say no it wont help VPN because VPN has to touch every packet for encapsulation and possibly compression.
But I also cannot see why it would hurt either.

It seems to me like the more advanced options i.e VPN, QoS, etc - will always be the cause of slowdown on consumer grade routers for the foreseeable future.

You'd need x86 based hardware or at least you'd need these features to be performed in hardware.

These low end ARM chips just don't have the firepower to handle all this advanced stuff.

It isn't likely to get any better until the ARM/MIPS SoC's they choose are significantly improved.

Quad core ARMv8 SoC's are common in chinese TV boxes so I'm not sure why they're still using obsolete dual core Cortex-A9 in top end consumer routers like the R7000 & R8500, etc.

I picked up a cheap Beelink box recently for KODI playback.
Amlogic S905; Quad core Cortex-A53 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM, 16GB eMMC, Wireless ac, GbE and hardware decoding of h264, hevc, etc all for £30.
Stick LibreELEC on there and you're golden.

I think the router manufacturers need to step it up a gear personally. The price difference can't be that great for SoC's with the numbers they're dealing with.

That's a really good news !

Do you think R7000 with SFE can handle a gigabit connection ?

I want to buy a another router for Wifi Bridging and if R7000 can be used easily with fiber connection I will take this one Smile

Great work guys !
Have you read the first post?
Yes I've read it. 650Mbps incoming - 900Mbps outgoing is not really clear for me. Incoming from WAN ? Outgoing from LAN to WAN ?

But you have post a question related to VPN and this question interessed me as well ! I just came here to have some information and congrat Kong and Brainslayer for their brillant work. So Cool man Wink

I won't post again. I will wait for release and some test and I will be fixed !

Thanks again for BS and Kong and Xeon2k8 for the answer !

The R7800 is the best router for that speed.

Yes, I've seen this router a lot on DD-WRT forum. I think I will do this : Buy the R7800 for my primary router and put my R7000 on my office in Bridge Client mode.

If R7000 with SFE can handle Gigabit connection on LAN that what I need on my setup !

Thanks for the advice Per Yngve Berg Wink

I was thinking about the R7800 but the Kernal version is only at 3.x. GUI support is better on the R7000 (like vlans) and also Wifi reliability is better on the R7000. Just things I read.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The R7000 is a Broadcom, that is it's limited to vlan 0-15. The Atheros IPQ does not have that limitation.

I know I am late to the party, but this is just really awesome and exciting.

I am soo looking forward to new builds!!

Thank you Kong and Brainslayer for implementing. And thank you to those who have found the patch/helped tested.

Out of curiosity what were the speeds on the R7000 before this addition? (I do not own one so I can not test)

The numbers seem to fluctuate depending on what you read:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=898448#898448

R7000 Wiki:
https://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DD-WRT_on_R7000

SmallNetBuilder and some posters on the Netgear forum have gotten it to hit ~900Mb:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/Netgear-R7000-WAN-Throughput/td-p/462114

Generally:
~650Mb stock with ip4 and NAT.
~350Mb with DD-WRT default settings.

The great news for R7000 owners is that Kong has released a new build with SFE for testing!

Thank you for the links... so if the numbers that Kong gave (repeated below)
Kong wrote:

Speeds with SFE on a R7000 with default cpu clk:

650Mbps incoming
900Mbps outgoing

thus is a huge improvement.

is what a typical user gets, that is comparable to stock. So I would assume that other routers would see a similar boost to about stock levels (Maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part).

Either way looking forward to testing it. And I need to donate more to show the extra appreciation!

Latest test with SFE on R7000 I did yesterday shows 900/900mbps:-)

Also was able to reproduce the hang issue and BrainSlayer imidiately had a clue and probably fixed it now with latest commits. Will soon upload new builds.

If SCF engine is enabled and QoS is enabled which one takes precedence over the other?

On my wzr1750dhp/dhpd SCF engine is enabled and QoS is enabled and configured on BS r32753.

QoS wont work for downstream.
