I just upgrade to Verizon FiOS Gigabit. I'm running my R7000 with DD-WRT installed as my connection (not the router/modem that Verizon supplies).

When I run a speed test i'm getting about 322 down and 480 up, instead of the 960 down and 880 up that verizon advertises.

Any suggestions on how to get the full speed through my R7000? Also, when i enable VPN on the R7000 my speeds drop ALOT.

Thanks.

First VPN, is very processor intensive, the dual core Arm CPU at 1000 HZ will not be able to do much more than 50-60 Mb/s. For fast VPN you need a router with a lot of processor power like a R 7800 which should give you about 300Mb/s.

For non VPN use the score is better, the figures I have seen on the forum are around 350 Mb/s so what you see seems normal to me Sad

With stock firmware you can get much better probably above 600 Mb/s.

This is possible because stock firmware has something called cut trhough forwarding (CTF), this bypasses the firewall/NAT, there are drawbacks: QOS is not possible and there are concerns about safety.
This CTF is propriety and thus not included in DDWRT yet. However testing is currently done with a similar kind of software called SFE (shortcut forwarding engine) that is supposed to give similar speeds as stock.

On my R6400 speeds went up from approx 300 Mb/s to 550 Mb/s with SFE enabled (R6400 is a slower R7000).

However SFE is not entirely stable yet so if you want better speeds with your router either revert to stock or wait till the SFE implementation is stable (which I hope is soon Smile )

Thanks for the info. Any other router suggestions besides the r7800?

Would love to keep VPN running, but don't like the hit i'm taking....

Would switching to the Verizon router jump me up until I get a new router?

Thanks again

Would the Linksys WRT 3200 ACM be a good option for quicker speeds?

I do not know figures about that particular router but the WRT1900ACS can do 100+ Mbp with 128-AES-CBC. WRT 1900/1200 are MIPs based and somewhat better than Broadcom but inferior to Qualcom/Atheros speed wise.

The fastest routers for VPN are those with the Atheros Qualcom chips like the R7800 or an R9000 with an Annapurna Labs chip.

The R9000 has a quadcore Annapurna Labs AL514 processor (quad core Arm cortex A15) with hardware encryption accelerator, at 1.7 Ghz

R7800 has a quad core Qualcomm IPQ8065 with two 800 MHZ cores and two Krait 300 cores at 1.7 GHz basically a big.little chip. Krait cores are cortex A9 derived but performance wise almost A15 class.
This chip also has a hardware Crypto accelerator (AES/3DES/SHA).

Of course the best is a PC with pFSense Smile
