I would like to be able to use the Personal Hotspot feature on an iPad to provide internet access to PC's hardwired to the LAN ports on a DD-WRT router in client mode. I want the DD-WRT router to be on the 192.168.1.x subnet.

I am using a Linksys E1200 v2 router with firmware v3.0-r29519 mega (04/25/16).

Following the instructions on DD_WRT Client Mode Setup, I have set the router wireless settings up to connect to the personal hotspot. When I power the router up I show a Personal Hotspot connection on the iPad. The DD-WRT router has DHCP turned on and serves the PC that is connected to the router LAN port an IP address (as a side note the DHCP is set as default to begin serving addresses at 192.168.1.100 but it serves the first PC connected 192.168.1.115. I am not sure why.) but I cannot get Internet access on the PC.

I have tried leaving the Network Setup under the Basic Setup tab at the default settings. I have also tried entering 172.20.10.1 for the IP addresses under Local Gateway and Local DNS because this is the IP address of the iPad. I have also put DNS server numbers in the DHCP settings on the Basic Setup tab. I have tried manually assigning my PC an address in the 192.168.1.x subnet and tried both 192.168.1.1 (the routers IP address) and 172.20.10.1 as a manually assigned gateway along with entering in DNS server numbers but this has not worked either. I have the basic settings page posted below.

I have noticed on the Status/Wireless page it shows no transmitted packets in the connection to the iPad as shown in the second screenshot.

The other setting that I have changed from default is to disable SPI firewall. The operating mode is Gateway.

If I select the Wireless Mode as Client Bridge, it works as expected and I can get Internet on a connected PC but the IP address that gets served to it is in the 172.20.10.x subnet which is what I am trying to avoid. What am I missing for this to work in client mode?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have tested a similar setup successfully but using a different router/build. I used a Netgear R6300v2 and Kong build 35550M. My hotspot was an iPhone with iOS 11.2.6. I don't see anything different with the settings screenshots you posted. I did set the 2.4GHz band as AP first, then use the site survey to select the hotspot's ssid, then clicked the "Join" button. After seeing the wireless status has connected successfully to the hotspot, I ssh-ed into the router to just do a ping 8.8.8.8 to confirm the path to the wan is ok. I used an android phone to connect to the router's AP (other band, the 5GHz).

Thanks for your reply.

Can you tell me on the Basic Setup tab under Network Setup do you have 172.20.10.1 as the Gateway and Local DNS? Also were you in Client mode or Client Bridge mode with the 2.4GHz band?

I have also tried doing a site survey and selecting join. It appears to me that doing this just populates the SSID box, but I am not sure. I still have no Internet on a PC connected to the LAN port.

Maybe the build that I am using is not compatible with this type of connection.

Yes, I had the iphone's IP 172.20.10.1 in both gateway and local dns fields.

I was using client mode with 2.4GHz.

Did you manage to get a WAN IP from the hotspot?
Tried ssh-ing into the router to ping 8.8.8.8?

I didn't put any static dns but I don't think that matters.

As for e1200v2 builds, search around for mrjcd's reports on the various builds. He has this model. One such thread is here.

I did not receive a WAN address. It stays at 0.0.0.0

I used Telnet to access the router and I did not get a reply from pinging 8.8.8.8. I also tried pinging 172.20.10.3 with no response. I do get a reply from 192.168.1.1.

When I look at the Wireless page under Status, I see no packets sent and there are also a large percentage of errors in the received packets as shown in the following screenshot.

The iPad does show that the router is connected to the hotspot, but apparently something is wrong with the connection. Probably something simple that I am missing.

Not sure why you are making this harder than need be
The setup is fairly simple

Read https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

Reset router....reboot....follow instructions....profit

Over the years I've accomplished this with
Linksys E1200 v2 (Broadcom) multiple builds
Netgear R3700 v2 (Atheros) multiple builds
Netgear WNDR 3400 v1 (Broadcom) multiple builds

Granted I've never used an iphone but used a couple different Verizon wireless hotspots and a couple different android cell phones using same carrier and AT&T

It always worked as expected wired and wireless, it also connects after reboots without any user input once set up

If you need a particular subnet.. you need to configure that on the hotspot.. because it will be the server assigning the ip addresses

Don't know if apple lets you control that?...android does

Good Luck

If for some reason it must be client mode...disregard the above.. I've just found this setup more versatile and solid accomplishing what I think you described

I have equipment that will be direct wired to the router that is on the 192.168.1.x subnet and cannot be configured on a different subnet.

The iPad access point is 172.20.10.1 and to my knowledge cannot be configured differently.

I believe that this locks me into client mode.

As I mentioned in my first post if I configure the router as a Client Bridge, the connection and Internet works, but that does accomplish my first requirement.

Well thanks for yet 1 more reason I'll never own an iphone

As thanks....

I reset my WNDR3400 v1 in my sig...rebooted...setup

Read https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Mode

Worked as expected tethered off my android..to laptop win10 by wire

Sorry my E1200 v2 is currently at remote location and no apples in my house

I'm guessing you are leaving out 1 step.....reset to defaults ... just because you change it back doesn't mean it didn't leave a mark

and from your post.. just changing wireless mode doesn't automatically change everything else

Good Luck

It was something simple. From an example that I was partially following, I had the WPA algorithm set to TKIP+AES. I changed this to AES and then things worked. A WAN IP address showed up on the router and Internet worked on the wired PC. I am not sure why the TKIP+AES worked in Client Bridge mode or why the personal hotspot showed the router as connected, but apparently this was the problem.

Special thanks to Ah-Pin-Kor and Dr_K for the time they spent in helping me out!
